Gibson Joe Walsh ’60 Les Paul Standard from the guys and gals at Gibson Custom, Released in 2013 as part of a limited run of 250 guitars. Produced in three tiers with 125 given Gibson’s proprietary VOS treatment, 75 receiving ageing by Gibsons own in house ageing specialist Tom Murphy and a further 50 guitars not only receiving the same meticulous hand ageing by Tom Murphy but were also signed by Joe Walsh.
Known for his unmistakable guitar playing in the James Gang and latterly the Eagles, Walsh has always had a special relationship with Gibson Guitars with one particular being an original 1960 Les Paul Standard he has owned for years. In celebration of this close association Gibson Custom have recreated this guitar in exacting detail, working closely with Walsh with access to the original instrument to create a dead-on reissue ’60 Les Paul Standard that captures the magical look and feel of the artist’s beloved guitar.
Featuring a solid, lightweight, one-piece, Grade-A Mahogany body with a top carved from hand selected maple to match to look of the original guitar. The Tangerine Burst finish is unique to this model and and is hand aged by Tom Murphy to recreate the look and feel of Joe’s original guitar. This particular guitar, Number 28, certainly looks the part, the ageing is very convincing and the guitar feels like it’s been played for years when in reality it has barely been played since new. The Tangerine Burst faithfully replicates the appearance of a ’60 Les Paul with known for their brighter tone of Cherry Sunburst than the “58 and ’59s. The carved maple top has a very interesting figure, the wide ribbon flame is defined and constant but really pops from certain angles.
Sonically the guitar has two of the best pickups Gibson has created since the fifties, the Custom Buckers are designed to be faithful replicas of the PAF’s in Joe’s original guitar with Alnico III magnets and wound to precisely match the specs of Joe’s original PAF humbuckers. Acoustically the guitar has good sustain with a nice snap and ring to the notes. Plugged in the guitar does everything well, clean or crunch it’s a versatile Les Paul. Other appointments include Grover Rotomatic tuners, ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge set up with its saddles slanted precisely as found on Joe’s original guitar with the body and fingerboard binding, pickguard, truss-rod cover, switch ring, and control cavity covers all period-correct for shape and colour, and the guitar’s controls carries four gold Top Hat knobs with silver Vol/Tone inserts.
The guitar is in excellent+ all original condition condition and has only been played occasionally to be checked over. it comes with its Original Custom Shop hardshell case, Certificate of Authenticity, hang tags, warranty card and even the original shipping box.
