Excellent Guild D-55 from 2005 in fantastic condition. Introduced in 1968 as a special order top of the range instrument the D-55 proved so popular it was added to Guild's regular production line by 1974. Built in small numbers the D-55 was expertly crafted from carefully selected tonewoods and appointed as is befitting a flagship range topping instrument.

The 1974 Guild catalog lists the guitar as:

Guilds finest dreadnaught - displaying the understated elegance that marks the performing artists personal guitar. Particular care is given to the aged Rosewood from which the sides and back are made. Its tone spectrum is beautifully balanced. Its projection remarkable.
Featuring Natural Spruce top. Rosewood sides and back. Guilds slim, fast-action, 3-piece maple neck with fully adjustable truss rod. Bound ebony fingerboard with inlayed mother-of-pearl rectangular position blocks. Bound head plate with inlayed mother-of-pearl Guild motif. Gold plated Grover Rotomatic machines. Ebony bridge. Black pickguard. Finest 7-ply ivoroid binding. Delicate mosaic stripe inlayed to the back any sides. 20 frets. Neck joins body at the 14th fret.

This guitar, dating to 2005 was built in Guild's Tacoma factory as part of the companies Traditional series. Still very much a flagship instrument, the specs haven’t changed a great deal since 1974. The guitar features a solid AAA Sitka Spruce top, solid book-matched Rosewood back and sides with scalloped red spruce bracing. A 3-Piece Mahogany/Walnut/Mahogany neck with bound Ebony board with a 12” radius. Still highly appointed, the 2005 model features an elegant tortoise example and an abalone rosette with the customary Guild “Peak and Shield” inlay and multi-ply binding retained.

Free from lacquer checking the thin nitrocellulose lacquer is in excellent condition throughout with only very minor pick swirls to the guard to give away the fact the instrument has been played. The guitar has gold plated Grover Rotomatic tuners with the original buttons switched for wooden ones and the white bridge pins swapped for black. The original pins and buttons have been retained in the guitars plush lined, original, Guild case.

In use the guitar has a full length 25.625” scale with a 43mm nut width. The neck profile is a generous C shape. Tonally the guitar has a good headroom with plenty of volume. It is clear and balanced with a sweetness in the bass and detailed harmonic content in the highs. The guitar plays well with a good action and plenty of height on the saddle.

An excellent example complete with its original, plush lined Guild case.
