Super cool, super clean 2019 Gibson SG Standard ’61 Maestro Vibrola in an evocative vintage 60’s Cherry finish. The guitar has seen little use and is in excellent condition. Part of the popular Original Collection, a series of guitars heavily inspired by the ‘Golden Era’ Gibson classics of the ‘50s and ‘60s. The SG Standard ’61 comes in three options Stoptail, Sideways Vibrola or with the Maestro Vibrola unit we have here.
Construction of the guitar follows the tried and tested Solid Guitar recipe Gibson have used since the early 60’s with a solid mahogany body and set 22 fret mahogany neck, Rosewood fingerboard with Trapezoid Inlays. The Vintage Cherry finish is Gloss Nitrocellulose Lacquer looks great and has the appearance of a lightly faded 60’s cherry red guitar. The hardware is Nickel throughout for an authentic early ’60s appearance. the hardware is all inspired by that used on the original run of the SG in the early sixties with Vintage tuners with Keystone buttons, a ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic Bridge, engraved Lyre tailpiece and 5-ply teardrop pickguard. The pickup are a set of Gibson Burstbucker 61R and 61T humbuckers wired to a 3-way selector with audio taper potentiometers and Orange Drop capacitors. The neck has the traditional 1 11/16th nut width with Medium Jumbo fret wire, the neck has a neck profile described by Gibson as SlimTaper measuring 21.35mm at the first fret and 23.88mm at the 12th.
The guitar feels great with a lively acoustic zing when strummed. The SlimTaper neck profile feels very comfortable, neither to thin or blade-like or un-profiled and clubby. The Burstbucker 61R and 61T humbuckers have plenty of bite and presence and work well for a variety of styles especially with the audio taper pots and orange drop caps giving full useable range from the volume and tone controls. The Maestro Vibrola is smooth and Bigsby-esque in its operation and like a Bigsby works perfectly for adding a shimmer, colour and texture to your playing. The guitar is in excellent condition, it has been played but is in fantastic condition. There is a little light oxidation to the Lyre Tailpiece and the case looks to have been stored in direct sunlight and has become slightly bleached.
