Superbly toneful and effortlessly elegant Gretsch 6125 Single Anniversary from the models inaugural year in the ever popular two-tone Smoke Green finish.

1958 would see the Gretsch Company celebrating the 75th Anniversary of its founding and to commemorate this achievement Gretsch issued four new mid-level models under the Anniversary title. There were single and double pickup models; each offered in either Sunburst; 6124 and 6117 and the 6125 and 6118 in Two Tone Smoke Green. It also saw the introduction of the Filtertron pickup. A departure for Gretsch who had previously used pickups manufactured by DeArmond. The Filtertron, designed by Ray Butts and in conjunction with Gretsch’s Jimmy Webster and Chet Atkins as an attempt to get rid of the hum from the previously used Singlecoil pickups.

In essence the 6125 is a simplified version of the classic Gretsch model the 6120 Chet Atkins. Both guitars shared similar construction including the 16 inch wide body with a depth of 2 ½ inches and importantly the bodies are trestle braced internally to suppress feedback. The single pickup version has a single volume control and 3-way preset tone switch. Our guitar dates to 1958 and shares all the features of the newly released model with an unbound ebony fingerboard with Neoclassic pearl inlays, nameplate on the headstock, space control bridge and Gretsch ‘G” tailpiece.

Our 6125 is a great playing example with plenty of character, the finish has aged nicely with marks consistent with a guitar that has been used regularly, noticeably on the back of the guitar with a patch of buckle rash. The guitar has had some binding work around the heel with a small amount of separation evident in the cutaway. The original, smooth pickup surround has small cracks but cause no issue and the original P.A.F cover has started to age from use. Strung with heavy flat wound strings, the guitar feels solidly constructed and has a massive sound acoustically. The nut measures a comfortable 44.09mm. Plugged in the single original PAF Filtertron really sings with the unmistakable fidelity, sparkle and presence Gretsch guitars are known for.

Whether it be for Chet style cleans, perfect Townsend overdrive tones all the way through to full on Crazy Horse with a cranked amp this ’58 6125 does it all with great playability and stunning looks. The guitar comes complete with its original case.
