1973 Gibson SG Custom, Walnut
Lean and mean early Seventies Gibson SG Custom in vibey, well loved condition. Traditional Gibson Custom model appointments and three pickups combine with the Gibson branded horseshoe Bigsby and Walnut finish to make for one killer looking and great sounding 50 year old guitar!
Featuring the iconic, bevel edged, double cutaway SG body made from Honduran Mahogany with a Honduras Mahogany neck, a bound 22 fret Ebony fingerboard with block Pearl position markers. Gibson headstock with Multi ply binding, Split Diamond and Gibson Pearl inlay. Gold plated hardware throughout including the rare Gibson branded Bigsby, Grover Tuners, ‘Harmonica’ Bridge and pickup covers. Three original Gibson Super humbuckers are wired in the traditional manner used from 1957 for all top level solid body instruments with the middle setting offering Bridge and Middle pickup together out of phase.
The Walnut finish is in good overall condition, there are areas of wear and the odd knock and bump, all consistent with a guitar that has been used regularly. The back of the neck shows some black overspray over what looks to be a well repaired Headstock crack. Otherwise the finish fluoresces as expected under blacklight. Internally the guitar is free of repairs with a trio of Gibson Super Humbuckers, a new pickup Gibson offered from 1973, and a quartet of matching CTS pots with source code 137 7325. Hardware is correct with the Gibson having returned to the smaller earlier Style pickguard. The gold hard ware shows plenty of pictured play through. The original fretless wonder Frets have been replaced and the nut is a brass replacement. The neck has a typical early seventies slim-taper with a nut width a hair under 40mm. Depth at the first fret is a slim 20.02mm filling out to 24.83mm at the 12th fret. The guitar weighs in at 8lbs even and comes with its original, Purple lined Gibson Case.
