Excellent Gibson Custom recreation of the venerable LG-2, a model that dates back to 1942. Its compact 14 1/4” body combined with its X-braced spruce top make for a popular guitar with plenty of projection and tonal qualities. The LG-2 Americana VS was released in late 2013 and was designed for Grammy Award winning Americana icon Patty Griffin and sold in Limited numbers.
The LG-2 was first released alongside the LG-1 and LG-3 in 1942 with very few instruments shipping before production slowed due to the American involvement in World War II. Gibson streamlined their range which would leave the LG-2 as the sole model in the LG series to receive the wartime ‘Banner’ headstock treatment. Post-war, as production and model numbers increased again, the LG proved to be quite the success for Gibson with each model having its own feature set, but all sharing the same 14 1/4 “ body size. Both the LG-1 and LG-2 were available in sunburst, their only distinction being the bracing patterns. The LG-1 would feature a ladder braced Spruce top whereas the LG-2 was X-braced giving it a much richer tone with more complex harmonics. The same went for the LG-3 but in a natural finish. In 1958 the LG-0 would join the range with its full mahogany body and ladder braced top to complete the range.
Featuring the same 14 1/4” body size as its vintage predecessor the Gibson Custom LG-2 Americana features an Adirondack Red Spruce top, Mahogany back & sides with multi-ply bound top, single-ply bound back and 3-ply single-ring rosette binding. A Mahogany neck with a slim taper profile with a 1.725”wide bone nut. Hide glue compound dovetail neck joint with the neck meeting the body at the 14th fret. Bracing is scalloped and like the neck joint affixed to the top with hide glue. The fingerboard and bridge are Indian Rosewood. Appointments include gold script Gibson logo, gold open back Waverly type tuners, Mother of Pearl dot inlays and a traditional tortoise teardrop pickguard. The Gibson Custom LG-2 Americana shipped with a LR Baggs Element Pickup installed.
The guitar is in great overall condition, there are light signs of playing wear but the guitar has been well looked after. Tonally it has opened up nicely and feels easy to play. Action is 3mm at the 12 fret with plenty of height on the saddle should adjustment be needed.
It’s easy to see why the LG-2 was a popular model for Gibson and why it remains so today. Its compact proportions and X-braced construction give the LG-2 a very different sound to it’s ladder braced cousins, with a warmth and richness much like a smaller, compressed J-45. Excellent for finger styles it also strums well with its compact size making it a very comfortable and versatile guitar. The L.R.Baggs Element pickup works well with simple intuitive controls and a clear, bright tone. The guitar has a strap button fitted to the neck heel.
The guitar comes complete with its original blue lined Gibson Custom Case and warranty card.
