Really nice early Fender JV Telecaster Thinline TN72-70 from 1983. These fantastic guitars are as a result of the collaboration between Fender and Japanese retailers Kanda Shokai and Yamano Gakki.
Fender Japan was established in March 1982 with the instruments manufactured by the FujiGen factory.
The TN-72-70 is based on the Fender Telecaster Thinline Type II with the 72 indicating the year the original Type II Thinline was released and the 70 reflecting the price in Yen. The TN72-70 spec follows that of the Type II Thinline with an Ash body with internally routed cavities to reduce weight and distinctive F hole, 3 bolt maple neck with ‘bullet’ truss rod, 7.25 radius and 21 frets. The Pickups are Fender Japan TN Wide Range humbuckers mounted to a mother of pearl scratch plate. The neck date is pencil marked 12-22-83. and the guitar JV serial number places the in the ’82-’84 period. The guitar is currently fitted with 2 gold knurled control knobs.
This example has been played during its near 40 years and has picked up various knocks and dings throughout. The worst which are localised around the input socket. The wear is purely cosmetic and adds to the overall vibe of the guitar. It looks and feels like many of the well loved American Fenders we have had from the ‘70s. Loud and snappy acoustically with an excellent plugged in sound with a warm, mellow neck pickup and a particularly good sounding articulate bridge pickup. The oval neck profile is comfortable and the strings spaced so as to not feel cramped.
