Lean and mean looking ES-335 from the early Seventies! One for the players, it has had a stoptail conversion, a repair to the neck and some changed parts including a great sounding set of Seymour Duncan Seth Lover humbuckers. If you're looking for a killer sounding, lightweight, vibey vintage 3-series on a budget look no further!
As a completed restoration the guitar has seen some changes, it features a three piece mahogany neck with pearl inlayed Gibson Logo and Crown to the headstock face, dark Rosewood fingerboard with small pearl block markers. The neck has a Made in USA stamp and small Volute. The body uses the short centre block seen between 1972 and 1975. It has a well executed repair to the neck/body joint, visible to the front of the guitar by the neck pickup surround. The finish is hard to authenticate due to the amount of changes that the guitar has seen, the headstock fluoresces differently to the rest of the guitar indicative of a repair and there is an area of touch up to the body/neck joint. Otherwise the Black finish blacklights consistently and has a nicely, naturally aged appearance. Black is a seldom seen finish on thinline Gibson guitars especially in the 50’s and 60’s although the shipping ledgers show that 288 ES-335TD were produced in Ebony in 1974 and a further 34 in 1975.
The guitar is fitted with a set of the excellent sounding Seymour Duncan Seth Lover pickups, designed to be a set of early style PAF Humbuckers with Alnico II magnets, unpotted coils and a balanced output of 7.4K in the Neck and 8.25 in the Bridge. The tuners are a quality set of modern replacements as are the reproduction ABR-1 bridge and stoptail. The original trapeze tailpiece holes have not been filled should you wish to return the guitar to factory or fit a Bigsby.
The guitar feels great to play, featherweight for an ES-335 at 7.2 lbs, in part due to the slightly different construction of the body on these '70s Thinlines. It has a loud, resonant acoustic voice - almost 330 like - that translates into a lively amplified tone especially with the unpotted Seth Lover Pickups. The guitar doesn’t need much prompting to creep into musical feedback. The neck profile is a slim C shape with a little more depth than some of the earlier '70s Gibson necks. Nut width is 40.89mm and the neck measures 19.58mm at the 1st fret and 25.47 at the 12th.
