2009 Gibson Custom Shop Angus Young SG Standard, Aged/Signed
2009 Gibson Custom Angus Young Signature SG Aged/Signed #34
Many musicians have used the Gibson SG to great effect since the model was introduced in 1961 but few are as synonymous with the model as Angus Young.
Since the early days of AC/DC Angus has been seen with a variety of Gibson SG’s both on stage and in the studio to record and perform the bands legendary hits.
In 2009 Gibson Custom released the much-anticipated Gibson Custom Inspired by Angus Young SG. As part of a limited run there we 250 guitars produced with 200 allocated for Gibson’s proprietary VOS treatment and a further 50 Aged instruments Signed and Played by Angus Young himself. All 250 instruments were sold immediately and due to the enduring popularity of the man and the band these instruments seldom come up for sale, specifically the signed, played and aged guitars.
Gibson Custom and Angus worked hard to create an instrument that would be befitting of the Inspired by name, there isn’t any part of this guitar that wasn’t designed, inspected and approved by Angus himself. As such the new instruments would benefit from a host of design and construction choices to elevate the model both visually and in use.
The instruments would feature a solid 2-piece Honduran Mahogany body with offset center seam, three piece quarter sawn maple neck to Angus’ exacting specifications including a unique heel shape, 12" radiused Ebony fretboard with unique Mother of Pearl Lightning Bolt inlays, 22 medium jumbo frets and a 1 9/16” bone nut.
The headstock itself is the large open book headstock with Inlaid Mother of Pearl Gibson logo and Crown used by Gibson in the seventies.
Likewise the hardware takes its queues from this favoured period of production with the iconic 3-ply "Batwing" pickguard (with floating neck position and pickup ring mounted in the bridge), black Witch Hat knobs w/ pointers, chrome hardware throughout including the Schaller M6 tuning machines, ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and Zamak stopbar tailpiece.
For the Electronics Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates Humbuckers were employed to great effect, featuring AlNiCo II magnets, Chrome plated covers and 7.3k (neck) & 8.35k (bridge) outputs. Pickups are wired through the trusted 3-way switch to 4 CTS 500k audio taper Vol and Tone pots. The tone controls are bypassed just like Angus prefers.
Finished in Angus Cherry to match Angus' personal guitars that are typically a bit darker than the average Cherry finish in nitrocellulose lacquer.
This rare guitar is #34 of #50 Aged examples that were Played and Signed by Angus Young himself. The guitar is in excellent condition and has only been played a handful if times. The guitar comes with its original Gibson Case with Autograph, Lightning Bolt Certificate of Authenticity, Warranty card and Gibson Japan Warranty.
For fans of SGs this guitar has everything we love about the model, it is light, comfortable with unhindered access to the fretboard. For Fans of Angus Young and AC/DC the guitar is a rare opportunity to own one of the most popular and rarest signature guitars Gibson have released.
